Past tense- a Form of Tense

Past tense is a form of tense. We use Tense in Grammar to simplify the time of action at the time of speaking. When we speak or write, we use sentences and each sentence tells us about the action done at a particular time. This tense shows the action that happened in the past time. In a sentence of past tense, we should use a verb in the past form. You know that verb has five forms. You can get the five forms of the verb in the lesson Forms of the Verb.

In Grammar, Past tense has four types-

In this tense, we should use the verb in the past form.

Examples-

› He was present.

› They completed their work on time.

› Did you send an email to your boss?

This tense shows the action that happened in the past but not completed at the time of speaking. That is, the verb shows continuous action in the past.

Examples-

› She was laughing at him.

› They were playing kabaddi with very ease.

› Was he doing his job carefully?

The verb in the sentence of past perfect tense shows the completed action in the past time at the time of speaking.

Examples-

› They had watched the horror film in the theatre.

› She had done it very well.

A verb in the sentence of past perfect imperfect tense shows the completed action in the past with continuation.

› It has been raining since Monday.
