Test of Divisibility by 3

Divisibility Rule to test if the number is divisible by 3-

Test for divisibility by 3: All multiples of 3 are divisible by 3 that is 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42…….
and the sum of the digits of these numbers is multiple of 3.

Test for divisibility by 3 is-

  • When the sum of the digits of a given number is divisible by 3, the number is divisible by 3.

Examples to check test for divisibility by 3

We shall take some examples to check the divisibility test by actually dividing the numbers by 3 to know whether we can use the rule of divisibility test by 3.

Have a look-

Of the numbers 514, 5343, 3965, 3625 which numbers are divisible by the number 3?

  • 514

 The sum of digits in the number 514 is 5 + 1 + 4 = 10,

The number 10 is not completely divisible by 3 so the number 514 is not divisible by 3.

  • 5343

The sum of digits in the number 5343 is 5 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 15.

The number 15 is divisible by 3. So the number 5343 is divisible by 3.

  • 3465

The sum of digits in the number 3465 is 3 + 4 + 6 + 5 =18.

The number 18 is divisible by 3. So 3465 is divisible by 3.

Let us check by actually dividing 3465 by 3.

We get remainder 0. So we can say that 3465 is completely divisible by 3.

  1. 3625 The sum of digits in the number 3625 is 3 + 6 + 2 + 5 =16. 16 is not divisible by 3. So the number 3625 is not divisible by 3.

Let us check –

Example for the test of divisibility by 3 showing 3625 is not divisible by 3
