What is Place Value and Face Value?

Place value and face value is the value of a digit in the given number. Now we shall clear the terms. We can define the face value and place value of a digit in the number.

Definition of Place Value and Face Value

  • Face value: Face value is the digit itself. For example, the face value of digit 2 in the number 6236 is 2 itself. 
  • Place value: Place value is a product of the face value and value of the place of a digit where it is located. For example, the place value of digit 3 in the number 6530 is 30.
  • The place of a digit in a number is decided by its position.

What is the Difference between Place Value and Face Value of a Digit?

The difference between place value and face value of a digit in the number is very easy to understand. There are so many numbers we use in our daily life. Some are having a single digit, and some are having more than one digit. They may have ten or more than ten digits, but we use numerals only 0 to 9. Each numeral we use has face value, place, and place value.

1.    Place value describes the place of a digit in a given number. Face value of a digit in a number is the digit itself.
2.    Place value depends on the place of a digit in the number. Face value does not depend on the place of a digit.
3.    Place value is a product of the digit and the place of a digit within a number. Face value of a digit always remains the same at any place in the number
4.    Place value of a digit= face value X numerical value of its place Face value of a digit= digit itself
5.    The place value of 0 in a given number is always 0. The face value of 0 is also 0.
6.    Example: Place value of 6 in 7632 is: 6 X 100 = 600 Example: Face value of 6 in 7632 is: 6

What is the difference between place and value?

The difference between place and value is- 

  • We call the place of a digit in the number is at units place, tens, hundreds, thousands…etc.
  • Value is the actual value of a digit in the number.
  • Example: In number 532, the place of 5 is hundreds and the value is 500. So, in number 532, place and value is 5 and 500 respectively.

Difference between place value and face value with examples

The face value of a digit is that digit itself though it may be at any place. Here is a difference between place value and face value with examples.

  • Each digit has a place value ten times that immediately to its right.

Keep in mind that-

  • Face value remains the same though it is used at different places.
  • The place value changes according to the place of the digit.

Example-1 

Using the ten base numerals- 0 to 9, we can show the numbers that we want to.

♦ In number 325, 2 is at place ten.

So, in the number 325-

  • face value of 2 is 2
  • place value of 2 is 20

Example-2

♦ In the number 235- 

  • face value of 3 is 3,
  • and as 3 is at ten’s place, the place value is 3 x 10 = 30

Example-3

♦ In the number 22434-

  •  face value of all 4 are the same, that is 4
  • the place value of 4 at the unit’s place is 4, and the hundred’s place is 400.

Example-4

♦ Now we shall see what the place value of 9 is in the number 49378.

We get the place value by multiplying face value and place of a digit.

  • The face value of 9 is 9.
  • In the number 49378, 9 is at the place thousand.
  • So the multiplication of face value of 9, and as 9 is at thousand’s place, it will be 1000 so we get 9 x 1000 = 9000

     We get the place value of 9 = 9000
