How to Test Divisibility

Divisibility Test

Divisibility test is a test to find out whether a number can be divided completely by another number or not. Sometimes we have to divide more than three digit number by another number which make us confuse. At this time, to make division easy, we can use divisibility test.

If we divide one number by another and we get remainder zero; that means first number is

completely divisible by another and another number is multiple of first.

We shall take one example.

We shall divide 24 by 6

24 is completely divisible by 6.

When we divide the number 24 by 6, we get-

  • the quotient 4
  • and remainder 0.

That is, we can say that the number-

  • 24 is completely divisible by 6.
  • 24 is a multiple of 6.
  • and 6 is a factor of 24

We shall divide 24 by 5

How to test divisibility
24 is not completely divisible by 5

NowIf we divide the number 24 by 5, we get-

  •  the quotient 4
  • and remainder 4

That is, we can say that the number-

  • 24 is not completely divisible by 5
  • 5 is not a factor of 24
  • and 24 is not a multiple of 5.

Multiples of a number

24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60 are multiples of 6 that is these numbers are completely divisible by 6.

20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 are multiples of 5 so to find out which number divides the given

number completely without leaving a remainder that is the divisibility.

To find out the divisibility there are some methods to test without actually carrying out the

division, is called Divisibility Test.
