Formation of Smallest and Largest Number

We can form Smallest and Largest Number by putting digits at different placesIn the last chapter we have seen how to form smallest and largest number from the given digits. Now we shall explore this topic more. We shall take examples and form smallest and largest numbers.

That is-

  • Unit
  • Ten
  • Hundred
  • Thousand

Let’s take some examples.

Smallest and Largest Numbers

Now we shall learn how to form smallest and largest two , three, four and five digit numbers.

Have a look-

Example 1- two digit number

If only two digits are given, we can form only two numbers. One will be smallest and other will be the largest.

Let the given digits be 6 and 2.

We will have two numbers using these numbers only once and those are- 26 and 62.

To form smallest number-

  • Place largest digit at unit place and
  • Smallest digit at tens place.

To form largest number-

  • Place smallest digit at unit place
  • Largest digit at tens place

That is out of the above two numbers-

  • Smallest number is 26
  • Greatest number is 62

Example 2- three digit number

If three digits are given, we can form six numbers by using each digit only once.

Let the digits be 3, 9 and 4.

To form smallest number-

  • Place largest digit at unit place
  • Second largest at tens place
  • Smallest digit at hundreds place

To form largest number

  • Place smallest digit at unit place
  • Second smallest digit at tens place
  • Largest digit at hundreds place

That is, by using the above three digits, we get-

  • Smallest number- 349
  • Largest number- 943

For four digit number go to- smallest and biggest number.

Example 3- five digit number

If we have to use five digits to form number of five digits using each digit once.

Let the digits be 8, 5, 7, 2 and 3.

To form the smallest number-

  • Place largest digit at unit place
  • Remaining digits in descending order at tens, hundreds, thousands and ten thousands place.

To form the largest number-

  • Place smallest digit at unit place
  • Remaining digits in ascending order from right to left that is at tens, hundreds, thousands and ten thousands place.

By using above five digits, we get-

  • smallest number-23578
  • largest number-87532

Exception

There is exception of zero. There is a little change in the formation. If zero is given with other digits that is we have 7, 0, 4, 3 and 9. We have to form the smallest and largest five digit number by using above digits once.

To form smallest number-

  • Place largest digit at unit place
  • Second largest at tens place
  • Third largest at hundreds place
  • Zero at thousands place
  • Smallest digit at ten thousands place

To form largest number-

  • Place zero at unit place
  • Remaining digits in ascending order from right to left

That is by using above digits we will have-

  • The smallest number- 30479
  • Largest number- 97430
