The passive voice of continuous past tense- How to form?
The passive voice of continuous past tense tells us that the action was being done on the object in the past. We should keep in mind that we have to use an auxiliary verb in the past tense. There is the use of being and past participle of a verb. We shall see how we can change active voice into passive voice of continuous past tense.
Here are some examples of continuous past tense.
All these examples are in an active voice.
- I was watching a movie.
- They were playing kabaddi.
- She was washing clothes.
Formation of active voice and passive voice of continuous past tense
Here is the formation.
Active voice
The sentence of continuous past tense in an active form is-
- Subject + past tense of auxiliary verb + present participle of main verb + object
Passive voice
Passive formation of the sentence in continuous past tense is-
- Object + past tense of auxiliary verb + being + past participle of main verb + by + subject
We have a sentence and we have to change it from active to passive. Let’s see how to change.
The sentence is-
- I was watching a movie.
Formation of the above sentence is-
Subject ‘I’ + past tense of auxiliary verb ‘was’ + present participle of ‘watch’ + object ‘movie’
We have to change the above sentence into a passive voice.
According to the formation rule we have seen, we can write the above sentence as;
- A movie was being watched by me.
In this sentence, the formation is-
Object ‘a movie’ + past tense of auxiliary verb ‘was’ + being + past participle of verb ‘watch’ + by + subject ‘me’

Example of passive voice with three persons
Now we shall take a sentence with three persons of singular as well as plural number.

1st person -I Active Voice I was finishing the work.
Passive Voice The work was being finished by me.
We Active Voice We were finishing the work.

2nd person -You Active Voice You were finishing the work.
Passive Voice The work was being finished by you.
You Active Voice You were finishing the work.

3rd person - He Active Voice He was finishing the work.

She Active Voice She was finishing the work.
Passive Voice The work was being finished by her.
They Active Voice They were finishing the work.
